This workshop is a study of the complimentary colors of indigo and orange from natural sources. Participants will create a variety of test swatches on silk, exploring shades of indigo and orange that nature has to offer through various mordanting and modifying processes. Through bundle dyeing, eco-printing, and dye bath techniques, we will create two silk scarves and a small wall hanging to showcase our test pieces. Skills learned: eco-printing, bundle dyeing, indigo vat dyeing, hand sewing, and local dye sourcing. We will explore a fructose indigo dye vat, a synthetic indigo dye vat, sulfur cosmos, marigolds, coreopsis, and onion skins. As an added bonus (because everyone should know about it!), we will have a simple wooden bead dyeing tutorial and all participants will create a beaded necklace to take home with them along with them two silk scarves.
