Corn Day

  • Rare Bird Farm 91 Duckett Top Tower Road Spring Creek, NC, 28743 United States (map)

We grow Jimmy Red Corn here at Rare Bird Farm and mill it on our stationary bike mill and make grits and flour with it.

Corn Day is a celebration of corn in all its forms—agricultural, culinary, artistic, musical, and cultural. Inspired by the traditions that brought communities together around the harvest, the day will feature Appalachian stories and ballads led by William Ritter through his Seed to Song project as we gather to shuck corn together, reviving the communal spirit of the old corn shucking bee.

Participants can explore heritage seed sharing and education, corn husk weaving and doll making, corn-inspired arts and crafts, workshops, demonstrations, and vendors dedicated to all things corn. Learn about the rich culinary history of corn through nixtamalization demonstrations, tortilla making, a cornbread cook-off, tastings, and traditional foods from across cultures. From music and storytelling to food, folkways, and seed stewardship, Corn Day honors the humble grain that has nourished communities and shaped traditions for generations.

If you or someone you know would be interested in leading a workshop, sharing seeds, demonstrating a traditional skill, performing, exhibiting artwork, or vending, we'd love to hear from you.
