Paper Flowers

An Inclusive Independent Film

Paper Flowers is an inclusive independent film rooted in community, music, and the belief that art is made for connection—not perfection.

Originally developed as a collaborative theatre musical, the project evolved into film as a values-driven decision—allowing for greater accessibility, flexibility, and creative agency for participating artists. The result is a 30–45 minute ensemble comedy centered on adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities as performers, musicians, makers, and creative collaborators.

The story unfolds as a modern Appalachian folktale, echoing long-standing regional themes of handmade over perfection and heart over efficiency. A group of outsider artists rally around a friend—an out-of-work DJ displaced by AI—and remind him, and us, that art is about belonging and making something real together.

Music is woven directly into the narrative. Local and regional musicians who have played at Rare Bird appear in the film, performing their own songs at a community open mic and shaping a soundtrack rooted in place.

Paper Flowers reflects Rare Bird Cultural Arts’ commitment to inclusive collaboration, paid creative opportunity, and locally grounded storytelling—and marks the first step in developing an ongoing model for inclusive independent filmmaking.
